Traditionally, church names are selected from one of two categories: geographic or theological. Our name, “Two Rivers Church,” satisfies both. We double-dipped!
Geographically, the area our church reaches is the western portion of the East Tennessee Valley, which is bordered by two rivers, the Clinch and the Tennessee. So the name is geographically descriptive.
Theologically, we are a church drawing from two 'rivers' of theological tradition.
The first 'river' of tradition could be called "The River of Truth." The centerpiece of the Truth Tradition is Jesus Christ, the very embodiment of God, both the Messenger and the Message.
This stream of theological thinking is identified by a deep devotion to God's word - the Bible. The Bible's unchangeable truths transcend time and culture. The Bible also relevantly speaks to us today.
We embrace this rich heritage of study and obedience to the Bible.
The second 'river' forming our identity could be called “The River of The Spirit.”
This stream of Christianity is known for its expressive worship, expectant prayer, and belief in the gifts of the Spirit.
Both traditions are rich and vital. Each tradition, left to itself, is weaker if not merged with the other.
The Truth Tradition can lapse into cool intellectualism if divorced from an expectant encounter with the Person of God.
The Spirit Tradition can veer toward subjectivity if not given order and definition through the absolutes of Biblical Truth.
The fact is, God never meant for these two rivers to flow separately.
Jesus once explained, "...the kind of worshippers the Father seeks are those who worship in Spirit and in Truth. God is Spirit and His worshippers must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth." (John 4:23-24)
We are Two Rivers Church because we want to enjoy the best of these two rivers of tradition... together!
So there you have it! Two Rivers Church!
A Church that is reaching out to the edges of the Tennessee Valley and beyond... and a Church that embraces the best of two theological traditions.
